Sam vs Khuri Sand Dunes: Which One Should You Actually Stay At?

Every Jaisalmer trip involves one early decision: which stretch of desert do you sleep in. The Sam vs Khuri sand dunes question comes up in our inbox several times a week, usually phrased as "I read Sam is too touristy, is Khuri better?"

The honest answer is that they are different products, not better and worse. Here is the comparison we give guests on the phone.

Sam Sand Dunes: the postcard, with the crowd

Sam is the dune field everyone pictures when they think of the Thar. The ridges are properly tall, the sand is fine and pale, and the crest catches sunset light in a way Khuri simply cannot match because the dunes there are lower.

That quality is why Sam is busy. On a February evening the main sunset point can hold several hundred people, plus camel handlers, chai sellers and jeep drivers. Between 5:30pm and 6:15pm it is a scene.

The trick — and this is the whole trick — is that the crowd occupies about 400 metres of a dune field that runs for kilometres. Walk or ride fifteen minutes out and you are alone. Every camp that puts its guests on a camel or a jeep rather than dropping them at the main point is selling you that solitude. Sam also has the infrastructure. If you want quad bikes, parasailing, dune bashing in an open-top Thar or a private candlelit dinner set up on a dune, it happens here because this is where the equipment and staff are. Our full activity list and prices covers what is available.

Khuri Sand Dunes: quieter, smaller, more human

Khuri is a genuine village of mud-and-thatch houses with a dune belt beside it. It was almost unknown for years, then guidebooks started recommending it as the anti-Sam, and it now has a steady trickle of camps of its own. Still nothing like Sam.

What you get is quiet. Sunset at Khuri often means you and a handful of other guests. You can walk out of your camp and be on empty sand in five minutes. Village life is right there — goats, children, women carrying water — and if that is part of what you want from Rajasthan, Khuri delivers it in a way Sam does not.

What you give up:

• Dune scale. Khuri dunes are lower and more broken up by scrub. Photographs feel less dramatic.
• Activities. Camel safari and jeep rides yes, parasailing and a full activity menu no.
• Camp choice. Fewer camps, and the top luxury tier is thin.
• Reliability. Standards vary more, and there are fewer operators with a long track record.

So which one

Choose Sam if this is your first time in the Thar, you want the big-dune photographs, you are travelling with family who will enjoy the activity options, or you have exactly one night and want the full experience compressed into it. Also choose Sam if you want luxury tents, since that is where they are.

Choose Khuri if you have been to Sam before, you are travelling as a couple who want an early night rather than a folk programme, or your priority is a village and a horizon with nothing in it. Photographers chasing minimal, empty compositions often prefer Khuri.

Choose both if you have three nights. One at Sam for the activities and the scale, one at Khuri to decompress. The drive between them is about 40 minutes.

A third option nobody mentions

If your real goal is emptiness, the answer is not Khuri — it is booking a camp at Sam and taking the half-day camel crossing or a night in a fly camp beyond the main dune field. Six kilometres into the Sam dunes there is nobody at all, and the dunes are still the tall ones. That is the combination Khuri cannot offer.

We run that as an overnight option for two guests or more. It needs a day of notice because water and a support vehicle go out ahead of you.

Practical notes for either

• Sunset timings shift by about 45 minutes across the year. Check the month-by-month table in our season guide.
• Both areas are 45 to 60 minutes from Jaisalmer city on good road. Do not agree to a "dune camp" more than an hour out unless you know exactly where it is.
• Mobile signal thins past Kanoi on the Sam road and is patchy at Khuri. Download your maps.
• Neither area has an ATM or a pharmacy. Carry cash and anything you take daily.
