Jaisalmer Itinerary: Perfect 1, 2 and 3 Day Plans (With Travel Times)

Most people give Jaisalmer one night, which is enough for the highlights and not enough for the desert. Two nights is the sweet spot. Three lets you reach the border sites that almost nobody sees.

Below is a Jaisalmer itinerary for each length, with the timings we actually use when planning guests' days, plus the honest version of what to drop when a train runs late.

Getting there first

• Jodhpur to Jaisalmer: 285km, 5 to 5.5 hours by road, or the overnight train. Most common approach.
• Jaipur to Jaisalmer: 560km, 9 to 10 hours by road. Take the overnight train instead.
• Delhi to Jaisalmer: the 14659 Delhi-Jaisalmer Express, roughly 18 hours, arriving early morning. Excellent use of a night.
• Flying: Jaisalmer airport has seasonal flights, mostly October to March. Verify your dates before planning around it.

The dunes are 42km west of the city, about 45 minutes. Build that drive into every plan below.

One day, one night

Tight but genuinely satisfying if you arrive by 9am.

Morning

• 9:00am — Jaisalmer Fort. Jain temples first, because they close at noon.
• 10:30am — wander the fort lanes, then Patwon Ki Haveli.
• 12:30pm — lunch on a rooftop with a fort view.

Afternoon

• 2:00pm — drive out towards the dunes, stopping at Kuldhara on the way.
• 3:30pm — check in at camp, tea, rest.
• 4:30pm — sunset camel safari, out to a dune away from the main point.

Evening

• 7:30pm — Rajasthani dinner at camp.
• 8:30pm — folk music and Kalbeliya dance around the bonfire.
• 10:00pm — walk ten minutes from the fire and look up.

Next morning

• 6:30am — sunrise on the dunes. Set an alarm. It is better than sunset and you will be alone.
• 9:00am — breakfast, then drive back.

What to cut if you arrive at noon: skip Patwon Ki Haveli and the rooftop lunch, and go straight from the fort to the camp. Never cut the camel safari to keep sightseeing — the desert is why you came.

Two days, two nights

The version we recommend.

Day 1 — Fort in the morning as above, Gadisar Lake at 4pm for the light, night in the old city or a haveli hotel. Bada Bagh cenotaphs at sunset if you would rather be outdoors.

Day 2 — Check out after breakfast, drive out via Kuldhara and Amar Sagar, reach the camp by 2pm. Afternoon: jeep safari and dune bashing, then quad bikes if you want them. 4:30pm: camel safari to the sunset point. Evening: dinner, cultural programme, bonfire.

Day 3 — Sunrise on the dunes, long breakfast, drive back for an afternoon train.

This splits the trip cleanly: city on day one, desert on day two, and no rushing on either. Activity prices for day two are listed in our adventure activities guide.

Three days, three nights

Day one and two as above. Day three is the one nobody plans and everybody remembers.

Day 3 — the border run

• 7:00am — early start. It is a long drive and worth it.
• 9:30am — Tanot Mata Temple, 120km out. A small BSF-maintained shrine famous for the unexploded shells that fell around it in the 1965 war.
• 11:00am — Longewala War Memorial, the 1971 battlefield where 120 Indian soldiers held off an armoured advance until dawn. Captured tanks, a Hunter aircraft, the original bunker.
• 1:00pm — lunch on the road back.
• 4:00pm — back at camp for a second, slower evening. Private dinner on a dune if you want the trip to end well.

Permits are not required for Tanot or Longewala, but carry photo ID for everyone in the vehicle — there are checkpoints. Do not attempt this drive without a driver who knows the road.

Where the time actually goes

Guests consistently underestimate three things:

1. The 45-minute drive to the dunes, each way. That is 90 minutes of your day.
2. How long the fort takes. Two hours minimum, three if you enjoy it.
3. How early sunset is in winter. In December the light is gone by 6:15pm, so a 5pm departure for a camel safari is already too late.

Booking order

Book in this sequence and nothing goes wrong:

1. The overnight train, as early as you can. Sleeper class to Jaisalmer sells out weeks ahead in season.
2. The camp night, with the tent type and safari written into the confirmation.
3. The private dune dinner, if you want one, at least two days ahead.
4. Everything else on arrival.
