Best Time to Visit Jaisalmer: Month-by-Month Weather, Festivals and Prices

The short answer: the best time to visit Jaisalmer is between October and March, when daytime highs sit around 22-30 degrees and the nights are cold enough to want a bonfire. We have been running camps on the Sam Sand Dunes since 2011, and the difference between a February night on the sand and a May one is not a matter of taste. It is the difference between a trip people talk about for years and one they cut short.

This guide breaks the year down month by month, with the honest version of each season, the weeks when prices climb, and what we would book in each window.

The three seasons, honestly

Winter, October to March

This is why people come. The desert light in these months is long and gold rather than white, which is what makes camel safari photographs work. Sunset at the dunes lands between 5:45pm and 6:30pm depending on the month, so a safari that starts at 4:30pm gives you the good hour without rushing.

Nights are the surprise for most guests. January can drop to 5 degrees on the open sand. We provide quilts, hot water bottles on request and a bonfire that stays lit until the last person leaves, but you should still pack a proper jacket. Our packing checklist goes season by season.

Summer, April to June

We will tell you straight: do not plan a desert night in May or June unless you have no choice. Daytime temperatures pass 45 degrees, the sand becomes too hot to walk on barefoot until well after dark, and camel safaris are restricted to first light and last light for the animals' welfare.

If you are travelling through anyway, come for a single night, take the 6am safari, spend the middle of the day inside the fort's thick walls, and treat the evening as the main event.

Monsoon, July to September

Jaisalmer gets around 150mm of rain in a normal year, most of it in short bursts. Those bursts are dramatic and the desert briefly turns green, which almost nobody sees. The trade-off is humidity and softer, less photogenic dunes. Rooms and tents are at their cheapest, and September is quietly one of the best value months of the year.

The Desert Festival runs for three days in February, timed to the full moon of Magh. Expect turban-tying contests, Mr Desert, camel polo, Kalbeliya dancers and a final night of folk music on the Sam dunes with several thousand people watching.

It is spectacular and it is crowded. Two practical notes from years of handling it:

• Camps within reach of Sam sell out six to eight weeks ahead, and rates roughly double.
• If you want the dunes to yourself, come the week before or the week after. You still get the season, without the buses.

Dates shift each year with the lunar calendar, so confirm on the Rajasthan Tourism site before booking flights.

When prices are lowest

Camp pricing here follows demand in a very predictable pattern:

1. Cheapest: July to September, plus the first half of October.
2. Mid: Late October, November, March.
3. Peak: 20 December to 5 January, and the Desert Festival week in February.

Our own tour packages start at 1,499 rupees per person for a camel safari and 2,999 for a Swiss tent, and we hold those rates outside the two peak windows above. If your dates are flexible by even a week, the last week of November and the first week of December are the sweet spot: winter weather, shoulder-season prices.

Best window for specific things

• Stargazing: November to February. Dry air, no haze, and the Milky Way is visible with the naked eye once you walk ten minutes from the bonfire.
• Photography: December and January for light and clarity, February for people and colour.
• Families with young children: November and February, when nights are cold but not harsh.
• Long camel safaris: December to February, the only months you can comfortably stay in the saddle for two hours.
• Solitude: the first two weeks of October, or September if you accept some humidity.

What to book, and when

For a December or February trip, book your camp six to eight weeks ahead. For any other month, two weeks is usually enough. The things worth reserving in advance rather than on arrival are the dinner on the dunes setup, which needs staff assigned to your table, and the sunset camel safari on Desert Festival weekend.
