Desert Adventure Activities in Jaisalmer: Prices, Timings and Safety

Beyond the camel, the Sam dune field carries a full menu of motorised fun. The desert adventure activities in Jaisalmer are also where the biggest quality gap between operators sits, because equipment either gets maintained or it does not, and you cannot tell from a photograph.

Here is what each activity costs with us, what it involves, and the questions we would ask any operator before getting in or on anything.

Per-jeep rather than per-person pricing is worth noting: a family of five pays 1,799 total for the jeep safari, which makes it the best value item on the list.

Jeep safari and dune bashing

An open-top Mahindra Thar, a driver who does this fifteen times a week, and 45 minutes of climbing and dropping dune faces well beyond where day visitors reach. There is a stop at a high dune for photographs and a slower run back.

It is the activity we recommend first, for two reasons. It reaches parts of the dune field the camels do not, and the intensity is adjustable — tell your driver you have children or a nervous passenger and the whole thing becomes a scenic drive instead. Say you want the full version and it is a rollercoaster.

Worth knowing: sit in the back if you want the ride, front if you want the view. Hold the roll bar, not the door. If anyone in your group gets motion sick, take a tablet 30 minutes before.

Quad bikes and dune buggies

Automatic 250cc quads on a marked track away from the camel routes. Full briefing, helmet, and an instructor who rides alongside first-timers. If you can ride a scooter you can ride these within a minute.

Fifteen minutes sounds short and is about right — the concentration required in soft sand is more tiring than people expect. Buggies take two, which suits couples and parents with an older child.

The safety questions: is a helmet included, is there a briefing, and is the track separated from where the camels and jeeps go. If any answer is vague, walk away.

Parasailing

A canopy, a harness with a double safety check, and a jeep that accelerates until you lift. You climb to maybe 50 metres, get ten to twelve minutes of air, and see the dune field as a pattern rather than a place. The operator takes photographs from the ground and sends them on WhatsApp.

No experience needed and no skill required — you are along for the ride. Weight limits apply, roughly 35kg to 95kg. Not suitable during high wind, and a good operator will cancel rather than fly you in it.

Sandboarding

A board, a dune face, and gravity. Cheap, brief and genuinely funny to watch. Best on the steep face of a big dune in the late afternoon when the sand has cooled. Teenagers love it; adults do it once for the photograph.

Timings through the year

• October to February: everything runs 9:00am to 5:30pm. The 3:30pm to 5:30pm slot is the best light for photographs.
• March and September: same, but avoid 12:00pm to 3:00pm.
• April to June: morning until 10:00am, then evening from 5:00pm. Metal seats and 44 degrees do not mix.

Motorised activities stop before the camel safaris head out, so the natural order in winter is: jeep and quads between 2:30pm and 4:00pm, then camel at 4:30pm, then dinner and the cultural programme.

Five safety questions for any operator

1. Who maintains the quads, and when were the brakes last checked? A specific answer is a good sign.
2. Is the helmet mine for the ride, and is it intact? Cracked shells are common at cheap outfits.
3. Does the jeep have a roll bar and functioning seat belts?
4. Is the parasail harness double-checked by a second person?
5. What happens if the wind picks up? The right answer is that the activity stops.

Which to pick if you only do one

• With children: jeep safari, dialled down. Everyone fits, nobody is scared.
• For the photograph: parasailing.
• For a thrill: quad bike, then ask the jeep driver for the full dune run.
• For the actual desert: none of the above. Take the camel safari, which is quiet enough to hear the sand.

Most guests do a jeep plus quads in one afternoon and are content.
